Material takeoff

Turn measured floor areas into a whole-box flooring purchase.

Enter your rectangular floor areas, selected extra material allowance, and the coverage printed for your product. The result keeps measured area, adjusted flooring requirement, calculated boxes, and boxes to purchase separate.

Measurements

Flooring worksheet

Start with the floor you measured. Coverage and allowance remain your selected product and project choices.

Floor areas

Each rectangle may use its own supported unit. Curves, slopes, and overlapping areas are not inferred.

Optional rectangular exclusion

Only deduct a rectangular area you intend to exclude. Exclusions must leave a positive floor area.

Selected product and allowance

Coverage per box is product-specific. Extra material allowance is your project choice; this calculator does not recommend a universal percentage.

Optional cost per box (USD)
USD

If supplied, estimated material cost uses the whole-box purchasing quantity.

  1. Measure each rectangular floor area, add them, then deduct any entered rectangular exclusions.

    11.148364800000001 m² = 11.148364800000001 m²= 11.15 m²
  2. Apply the extra material allowance you selected.

    11.148364800000001 m² × (1 + 10 ÷ 100) = 12.263201280000002 m²= 12.26 m²
  3. Divide the adjusted flooring area by the selected product coverage per box.

    12.263201280000002 m² ÷ 1.8580608 m² per box = 6.600000000000001 boxes= 6.6 boxes
  4. Round upward to whole boxes for the purchasing quantity.

    round up 6.600000000000001 boxes = 7 boxes= 7 boxes

Assumptions & warnings

  • Coverage per box: 20 ft²
  • Extra material allowance: 10%
  • info: Coverage per box is product-specific and comes from your selected product; this calculator does not assume a universal package size.
  • info: Extra material allowance is a project choice. Layout pattern and cut complexity can affect it, but no universal allowance is applied.
  • warning: Planning-only material takeoff. It does not provide installation, structural, moisture-barrier, subfloor, code-compliance, or manufacturer-warranty advice.
  • info: The purchasing quantity is rounded upward to whole boxes.

Dimensions are normalized to metres and surface areas to square metres before display conversion.

  • User-entered rectangular floor areasuser configurable assumption

The calculator does not infer curves, slopes, layout, or unentered areas.

  • User-entered rectangular excluded areasuser configurable assumption

Exclusions are deducted only when you enter them and must leave a positive floor area.

  • Rectangular area relationshipmathematical relationship

Each floor or exclusion area is normalized length multiplied by normalized width.

  • User-entered product coverage per boxmanufacturer specification

Package coverage is product-specific; no universal box coverage is assumed.

  • User-configured extra material allowanceuser configurable assumption

The calculator does not recommend a universal allowance percentage.

  • Whole-box purchasing round-upmathematical relationship

The calculated package requirement is rounded upward to avoid under-ordering.

  • User-entered price per boxuser configurable assumption

Optional material cost is based on whole boxes to purchase; no live supplier pricing is used.

Method

The engine sums user-entered rectangular floor areas, deducts any user-entered rectangular exclusions, applies the selected extra material allowance, divides by the product coverage per box, then rounds upward to whole boxes.

Worked example

The starting worksheet has 120 ft² of measured floor area. Its selected 10% extra material allowance produces 132 ft² of required flooring. At 20 ft² per box, that is 6.6 calculated boxes and 7 boxes to purchase.

Planning considerations

Confirm the coverage shown for the exact flooring product you selected. Layout pattern and cut complexity may affect the allowance you choose, but this tool does not apply a universal pattern-waste rule.

Scope

This is a Planning-only material takeoff. It does not provide installation, structural, moisture-barrier, subfloor, code-compliance, or manufacturer-warranty advice.
